In our most epic match of the season so far we put ourselves right back into the title race with a win over the Shooters. It was a game full of controversy and action.
We came with a strong squad but so did our opposition and it was clear from the start that we were in for a tough one. Both teams were intent on attacking and left space behind and around their defences for the offences to exploit.
The first real moment of excitement came when Tobi hammered a shot off the underside of the bar. We and neutral bystanders were convinced the ball bounced over the line but the officials were unwilling to make such a big call.
We then fell behind when a corner and a scramble in the box ended with their striker, Kevin, smashing home through a crowd of players.
Our equaliser was controversial as Mandela and a defender clashed and the ball bounced off the defender to Tobi who may have been offside. Tobi did not show a minute’s hesitation though and advanced to put the ball in the net.
After much Shooters’ complaining about the goal it was perhaps predictable when the referee gave them a penalty for what looked like an entirely clean challenge from Essien in our box. Kevin stepped up and missed and we went into half time all square.
The second half was a different beast, with the Shooters losing some energy and us stepping up ours considerable. Mandela and Tobi missed presentable opportunities before Thomas raided down the right and picked out Tobi who blasted home from 20 yards on the half volley.
The rest of the game was tight and the Shooters put us under some pressure, particularly from corners where our drafted in keeper Kellen showed superb handling and calm to relieve much pressure. Their best chance to equalise fell to Kevin who could not find the right shot after finding himself one on one with the keeper from an angle.
The win took us to first, a feat matched by our second team. All in all a great day for the club with the Lions dropping points in their game too!
